thr33som3s

Emerging as a sort of bad boy on the NFT scene, at first glance, thr33som3s seems to thumb his nose at nearly everything in the digitally centered, software and AI produced playgrounds of his contemporaries.  Painting by hand in a heavy, rough-textured gouache on weathered, sometimes creased, vintage baseball cards his work sits in a harsh defiance of the slick polish of gleaming chrome and flashes of bright color one associates with the works of the very artists thr33som3s may depict in his cards.  Artists like Fvckrender or Mad Dog Jones, or Pak find themselves playing for an imaginary baseball team in the thr33som3s universe, confined to flat, two-dimensional portraits.

But, then come the second and third glances at the thr33som3s collection.

With each new series, further overlapping layers are exposed and the intricacies of interaction between the growing cast of characters and teams take shape and start to lead the narrative. Players may change teams or explore new traits through highlighted sub-series only available by burning older versions of a painting (banishing them from the thr33som3s ecosystem to a cold wallet on the blockchain accessible by no one.)  Players and traits are combined by moving them from wallet to wallet to unlock new paintings.  Converting some paintings into tokens of currency, others into keys to walled gardens within the ever expanding rosters of teams and players, the idea that these are simply 2D, flat painted baseball cards fades away.  They suddenly make total sense in this space. It fits perfectly that collectors around the globe are moving the cards around in real time.  It is key that all collectors can use the blockchain to track exactly how many of a given edition still exist as they begin to imagine what the next twists and turns await what had once been a painting and now is absolutely an NFT.
